OLPC is here

I’m taking some time off from work to relax a bit. And just in time for that, my OLPC arrived. Check out the photoset on Flickr. It’s an impressive little machine, and I’m very happy to have got this instead of a Kindle. :)

    Hi Micah,

I’ve heard that the OLPC has a separate display mode that is more hi-res hi-contrast (in black and white?) than the regular display mode, which would be key to its potential with competing with something like Kindle or the Sony ebook reader. Is this true, and how does it look? Can you read PDFs in that mode?

It has a screen that isn’t totally dependent on backlighting like a regular laptop. You would need fairly good ambient lighting, say sunlight, but it is possible to use it that way. It has an “ebook” mode, where the entire unit other than the screen goes to sleep except to turn pages–excellent battery life that way. It reads PDFs and a few other formats.

In the monochrome mode, the screen resolution is excellent. Very readable. -m
