Update: minutes of TAG linking meeting.

What was it like? Pretty much everybody re-hashing well-known opinions, though there was some support for the 'three-ways' concept. (Just as style, or script can occur out-of-line, in the head section, or on-the-spot inline, so should linking be defined/declared.)

The only result of the meeting is to more firmly entrench the status quo. The HTML folks still consider XLink to be just as technically inadequate as before, and still don't have any idea how to move forward with 'href' and 'src' in XHTML 2.0.

This is most disappointing, of similar personal impact as the Eldred case (which also more firmly entrenches an unpleasant status quo.)

Perhaps it's time to update SkunkLink.. -m

Bob DuCharme has implemented an example of 1-to-many linking as described in SkunkLink.

I take this as an encouraging sign that something like this will be possible for XHTML 2.0--if non-technical problems don't get in the way. -m

In ten minutes, I will be discussing XML linking with the TAG. A good deal of what I have to say is now in my O'Reilly Blog. -m

Big Phone Companies Prepare to Further Boost Rates

Here's how to deal with the phone company (which was charging me an outrageous amount for "local toll" calls to locations not ten miles from here). Vote with your pocketbook:

  1. Get a cellular plan with unlimited nights and weekends. (Everyone has a cell phone already, right?) Call mostly during those times.

  2. Cancel all long distance service on your regular line.

  3. Cancel all local toll service on your regular line.

  4. Go to your favorite warehouse shopping center, and get a few 1000 minute calling cards. Use them for any non-local calls that you have to make during weekday daytime hours.

This is saving me around $100 each month. -m
