Walk the Line

Google's announcement today about the Pack bundle sure is interesting. To make it work, Google is going to have to do some careful balancing acts.

Useful stuff vs. shovelware. Once something like this is in place, various groups will be pressing to include their stuff. The distribution needs careful balance between deciding what's useful and what's crap (including things that turn into a liability after some demo period runs out).

Support levels. If people start getting this stuff from Google, they'll expect support from Google. Sending folks back to Mozilla, Adobe, Symantec, etc. for support is always an option, but one that may easily provoke users already upset that something in their download isn't working. On the other hand, fully supporting all those packages will be expensive.

Also, how about a little something for those not presently burdened with Windows XP? -m
