Annoyed? Read this..

I'm happy to announce my new monthly column on xml.com: XML Annoyances

At this point, XML is essentially plumbing. And plumbing is difficult to write about in a way that more than a small core of dedicatees will bother to read. Thus a broader topic: annoying things in XML.

Insert joke here about shooting fish in a barrel, etc. :)

OK, I make jokes like that all the time, as do most of the W3C geeks and XML pros I have the pleasure of regularly or occasionally hanging out with.

But now I've had lots of conversations with folks who use XML only once in a while, not enough to, say, subscribe to xml-dev. Most of these folks have only brushed the surface of XML, and might not

So spread the word. You don't have to be an expert to get something out of this column. If you have any ideas for things that annoy you about XML, and even better--solutions, post a comment here or on the article. I'm always on the lookout for fresh topics. Thanks! -m

I love it. Bah, I just commented on xml.com and missed out a relevant point - because of the way microformats are constructed, you can automatically & transparently derive RDF from them using GRDDL.

Heh, you already mentioned what I personally consider by far the most annoying thing in XML - OPML. But maybe there's a potential topic in my #2 - people seeing XML as a silver bullet for communication on the Web, and the associated idea that agreement on the bits over the wire syntax is enough in the general case (A possible #3 would be the equally dodgy belief that because XML doesn't solve everything, it's useless).

I'm just fresh from a long blog post on the matter, -

One quibble: "If you're like me, your brain can hold three, maybe four markup languages at a time.". If one of those languages is RDF/XML, the figure is much lower ;-)
