iTunes 4.9 troubles

I grabbed the iTunes 4.9 update this morning, only to have the application lock solid upon first (and second, etc.) launch. Unplugging the iPod and reconnecting got past that step, but then it asked, "The iPod is linked to another iTunes music library. Do you want to change the link to this iTunes music library and replace all existing songs and playlists on this iPod with those from this library?" What is that supposed to mean? I'm lost in a sea of "this"es. And what would happen if I click "no"? And the prompt is modal, so you can't go an investigate what's there.

I'm continually disappointed in how user-hostile iTunes is when it comes to 'copy-sensitive' issues. I guess that's why I never buy music from the iTunes store.

BTW, I clicked 'Yes', under the theory that my local music library was the canonical one, and erasing the iPod only to copy over those exact same songs was the least disruptive option. Upon clicking, iTunes locked solid again... After a minute or so, it came back to life, with my entire music library gone. The mp3 files are all still on my hard drive, they just don't show up in iTunes. Now what? -m
