Google down? The details..

Google's global properties went down for a short time Saturday, with lots of speculation flying about (especially in the weblog comments). Here's the details.

DNS for Google did go down briefly. Several browsers, upon a failed DNS request, will redirect to other sites. Thus reports of SOGO or MSN appearing in a browser don't represent anything special, only standard error behavior in browsers.

If you do a whois google.com you'll see some interesting things at the moment.

GOOGLE.COM.SUCKS.FIND.CRACKZ.WITH.SEARCH.GULLI.COM

GOOGLE.COM.HAS.LESS.FREE.PORN.IN.ITS.SEARCH.ENGINE.THAN.SECZY.COM

GOOGLE.COM

The third one there is the real DNS entry for Google, apparently in fine working order. The other two are separate records that have been inserted by 3rd parties, which is bad, but not terribly newsworthy. So Google's domain registration if fine.

All in all, there is no evidence of a "hack". A painful, embarrasing, internal gaffe, yes. No crackers involved this round, though. -m
